The West Des Moines Historical Society is committed to providing education to school visitors, especially in this time of shrinking budgets. We now offer two programs at no charge which will allow students to “walk in the footsteps of history” virtually!

Live Virtual School Tours

Any public school in Iowa or surrounding state canĀ  schedule a free live virtual tour of the Jordan House or Bennett School Museum in the 2021/2022 school year. Tours can be up to an hour, your tour guide can emphasize lessons based on curriculum requirements, and best of all, we encourage questions during the programs! This is a perfect way to fulfil those social studies requirements at no cost to your school.

Free History of Iowa Videos

Thanks to funding from the State Historical Society of Iowa, Inc. and the talents of Conjunction Media, the West Des Moines Historical Society has 6 informative videos and supporting curriculum which can be utilized by educators, free of charge! These videos introduce concepts and history normally explored during tours of the Jordan House Museum, including:

  • The Underground Railroad in Iowa
  • Iowa Women and the Underground Railroad

  • Rule Maker vs. Rule Breaker
  • The John Brown Freedom Trail
  • Iowa in Times of War

These videos can be used as a stand-alone lesson, or combined with a live virtual tour of the Jordan House Museum. To receive a link to a video or to schedule your live virtual tour, please email info@wdmhs.org or call us at (515) 225-1286.
